I thought it would be awfully easy for someone to shoot the president when he on his desk.

Know the Oval Office.
During World War II was the last window with balls made of glass and window frames and steel frames.
(I am assuming that improved bulletproof window, over the years to keep pace with the technological progress.)
Apart from hand or installed the briefings, which are (still) not a device in the Oval Office has.
